Think of your competition… Now think of your clients!
What if you were your own worst marketing enemy? I know what you are thinking… “That can’t be true!!” You would never turn away customers. (At least not intentionally, right?) You may be surprised at some of these common mistakes business owners make that turn away clients and lose a ton of profit!
1. You Distract Them
Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about. You have been to a site and realize there are a TON of links. It takes you to the latest news, ads, funny videos etc. Before you know it, you have opened 10 screens expecting to watch or read them all and then you realize a half hour later that you completely forgot why you were on the website in the first place.
For all you online marketers, this one especially holds true for you! If I went to your sales page, how many clickable links would I find? If you want to make the sale, make sure your potential customers don’t lost and never find their way back to your order page!
2. You Unpleasantly Surprise Them
If you have ever gotten a “extra” bill you know what I’m talking about. You pull out the cash (or checks, but who uses checks these days! J ) only to find out there was a some mystery fee that they never told you about. Or it was buried in the fine print. You may find it in a vacation package, an insurance policy etc. You know you are stuck paying it, so you just bite your cheek and hand over the cash.
Think of the experience you had in that case. Now imagine how your clients may feel if you are doing that to them? You may think it’s just one of those things you include but they won’t mind. If YOU don’t like it, they won’t like it. So DON’T DO IT!!!
Be upfront with your pricing and services. If you charge for shipping, tell them. If you have an extra handling fee, let them know BEFORE they buy. Don’t hit them up for it after they have made the purchase. It might put a little extra money in your pocket now, but in the long run, you are going to lose far more clients than that little bit of extra money is going to be worth.
3. You REALLY Confuse Them
Options, options options… We think it’s great to give our clients options, but what may happen if you give them too many? The study of choices has shown that too many options actually make people not buy, and if they do, they tend to have more buyers’ remorse. So your options may just be pushing them away from the sale and not towards it! They may have good intentions of coming back for the sale, but they are at a much higher risk of coming back once they leave. Keep the choices as simple as possible!
Conclusion
Business is tough as it is, the last thing you want to do is be unconsciously pushing away potential sales. Now that you are aware, these three keys to sending customers away, are keys you’ll want to watch out for. Don’t make the mistake of self-destructing your business and sabotaging your profits.
